The Department of Defense (DoD) Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) framework mandates that defense contractors handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) secure their data following the 110 controls outlined in NIST SP 800-171. CUI is prohibited from being stored on commercial systems such as Google or Microsoft’s standard offerings.
